Mommy Makeover Michigan: Insider Tips from the Surgeons at Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery

Many women will need a breast lift as part of their mommy makeover. If you’re worried about scarring, ask about vertical breast lifting This technique uses a “lollipop” incision to reduce scarring for appropriate patients.

Our Power Tuck procedure provides 360-degree waist contouring. For many women, a Power Tuck can create an even slimmer, trimmer waist than their pre-baby size.

Modern mommy makeovers may include a labiaplasty, which addresses extra tissue of the labia minora that can worsen with pregnancy and childbirth.

Childcare is a big concern for many moms. Ask your surgeon about quick recovery techniques to reduce downtime and get back to life sooner after surgery.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

Pregnancy is a time of significant change, both for your lifestyle and for your body. After pregnancy, many women report some degree of dissatisfaction with their post-baby body, including stretch marks, loose skin, sagging breasts, stretched out abdominal muscles, stubborn pockets of unwanted fat, and changes to the labia. Often, even when women return to their pre-baby weight, the changes in their bodies are not resolved by working out or dieting.

A mommy makeover combines surgical treatments to restore the body after having children. As pregnancy affects multiple areas of the body, namely the breasts, abdomen, and labia, many women will receive more than one procedure. These are typically performed during one trip to the operating room for appropriate patients, but may involve two separate procedures if necessary for safety and recovery.

A mommy makeover may include some or all of the following treatments:

The procedures in your mommy makeover will be selected based on your individual goals for surgery and the unique changes you experienced during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.

What to Expect from a Mommy Makeover in Ann Arbor, MI

Our surgeons will help you understand what to expect from surgery as you prepare for your mommy makeover.

In most cases, all of the procedures needed for your transformation will be performed during one trip to the operating room. Most patients will receive general anesthesia for this procedure.

A tummy tuck transforms the abdominal area, one of the areas that is greatly impacted by pregnancy. Your surgeon will make an incision across your lower belly, in a location that will be easy to hide with most lingerie and swimsuits. They will remove excess skin and fat and tighten the abdominal muscles. Some patients will benefit from our Power Tuck, a tummy tuck and liposuction combination that provides 360-degree enhancement.

Many women lose breast volume during pregnancy. Breast augmentation uses implants to increase size and enhance breast shape. Your surgeon will place the implant into the breast through carefully placed incisions. Breast implants come in many sizes and shapes for a truly customized approach that will help you meet your goals.

Breast sagging is one of the most common complaints after pregnancy. A breast lift, or mastopexy, reshapes and repositions the breast mound and nipples to rejuvenate the breasts. During the procedure, excess skin is removed and the breast is lifted to sit higher on the chest wall. This procedure is often combined with breast augmentation to restore volume.

Liposuction removes stubborn fat. This treatment is ideal for problem areas where fat won’t budge, including the waist, hips, thighs, and tummy. Small incisions are made to suction away unwanted fat to recontour each area carefully.

Stretched out labia are common after pregnancy. A labiaplasty restores comfort and improves the aesthetic appearance of the labia by resizing the labia minora or majora.

Recovery After Your Mommy Makeover

Multiple treatments are often performed during one visit to the operating room. You’ll recover from your tummy tuck and breast surgery at the same time, reducing your total recovery time compared to if the procedures were performed separately.

  • Most patients will need approximately two weeks off of work. More time off may be necessary if you work at a strenuous job.
  • Avoid heavy lifting and intense physical exercise until your surgeon has cleared you. Most patients need about four to six weeks until they can advance their activities.
  • Arrange for help with childcare as you’ll be unable to lift small children for several weeks.

Mommy Makeover FAQs

Women that are unhappy with their body after pregnancy can often benefit from a mommy makeover. The best candidates are not planning future pregnancies, have finished breastfeeding, and are within 5-10 lbs of their goal weight. We’ll review your medical history to ensure this surgery is safe for you.

Your mommy makeover cost depends on the combination of procedures you receive. We’ll provide a personalized quote during your consultation. View our cost estimator and plastic surgery costs pages for more useful information.

Your mommy makeover is customized to you. We’ll help you choose the best procedures to address your body concerns.

Most patients will only require a single trip to the operating room for their mommy makeover procedure.

You should be cautious when lifting anything, especially your children, soon after surgery. Your surgeon can give you specific guidance on when you’ll be able to resume lifting and carrying your children — holding your children while seated can alleviate some of the strain of lifting while enabling you to hold and care for your child. You will need some assistance with childcare during the recovery process, especially if you have small children.

Pregnancy is safe after a mommy makeover, though you should be aware that aesthetic changes are likely. Just as pregnancy changed your body before surgery, it may change it after. We recommend waiting until you’ve finished bearing children to have mommy makeover surgery to ensure long-lasting results.

Most women can breastfeed after getting implants. It’s impossible to tell before surgery, so it’s best to wait until you are done having children and breastfeeding to get breast enhancement surgery if breastfeeding is important to you.
